Crochet--
Saturday, November 10, 2001 @ 9:59 a.m.

I learned to crochet when I was 4.

I remember being absolutely desperate to figure the manual out. My mom had this 30 volume set of sewing and needle arts encyclopedias. I was four so I could barely read anything. But it had tons of step by step diagrams and pictures.

I remember staring and staring endlessly at the pictures, while mom did her house work. Crochet needle in one hand, yarn in the other. Wanting desperately for it to wrap itself around the needle in the way that it looked in the picture.

Mom couldn't figure it out and went back to her cleaning.

My uncle worked for El Paso Natural Gas and this sometimes brought him through our small dusty town. I remember sitting at the kitchen bar with him. He deciphering the diagrams for me and getting that first chain stitch put into the yarn for me. From that moment on I was chaining and chaining and chaining. I'd rip it out and do it again and again.

My Grandma, the crocheting Diva of the family, was the one who showed me how to go back over the chain to add row upon row, I think my first projects were pot holders, isn't everyone's first project always a pot holder? Hmm... seems a popular choice.
