Evidently they remember me and my Casbah Rocking from last summer.
Tuesday, August 12, 2003 @ 8:27 p.m.

What a very interesting day. If you will remember back, last summer was my summer of rocking the casbah, in which I was heavily courted and interviewed many times for a coveted elementary science specialist position in my school district. Well, I didn't get the job, because of that one little room in the casbah I didn't manage to rock, and ended up being very thankful for it. So, that was in the past and out of my mind, and now I'm all geared up about being the outdoor learning area instructor at my school, and nurturing seven hundred twenty-three student's green thumbs. I'm absolutely pumped about it, and more importantly I've been smiling at work. A lot. I like that feeling of smiling while I'm at work, I even caught myself whistling at work today. I have not whistled in ages! [Abba's Gimme, Gimme, Gimme! {a man after midnight}] I realized what I was whistling then wondered if anyone recognized the tune. Perhaps not shyly, but admittedly a bit sheepishly. Anyway, the point being I've been giddy about this job, and am being so productive, and have already gotten enough gardening materials donated, 100% free of charge, for my K-2 students.

So, [sigh] when Principal Salsa del Fuego called me into her office sat me down and told me she had some great news for me there was not a single gram of me that was expecting her to say that the superintendent had called her and told her that tomorrow they were going to be offering me, Madrigle, a position as a science specialist. I would be split between my current school and another elementary school. As she uttered the words my current corner of the universe came crashing down and I felt as though I was going to hyperventilate and simultaneously burst out in a hysterical sorry-ass cry. Anyway I explained to her about how excited I am about our new gardening program, and that I had no desire to work with the person {I don't care to come up with a name for her} who oversees the science specialist in our districts. I wanted to say something about it being nice that they have finally got their heads unlodged from their butts and realized I should have had the job in the first place but I refrained, partly because I know Principal Salsa del Fuego feels the same way. Anyway, I told her that I intend to turn the job down, and stay in my current assignment as gardening instructor, but I wanted to make sure that this would not reflect badly on her. She assured me it would not, so I breathed a much needed, at that moment, sigh of relief. I gave her a hug, and went about my business, started whistling again shortly thereafter, and shook my head at the politics in my school district.

Besides, my whole current work philosophy is this. This year [possibly longer if I find additional funding for my salary] as a gardening instructor will either rejuvenate me giving me the strength I will need to reenter a traditional classroom, or it will be a grand exit to a 5 year stellar teaching career and I can go on to manage a neighborhood Starbucks, make a significantly larger salary, get better benefits, have a more social existence, etc. Besides, I've already made it a year longer then the average teacher's career in this country.
