Our lady of the Red Purse Diary
Sunday, August 1, 2004 @ 12:37 p.m.

I cavorted around one of my very favorite spots on the planet with the incomparable, Red Purse, while I was home in New Mexico. I'm not sure why the Knob Hill area of Albuquerque resonates with me so. Perhaps it is its, seen better days, charm. At any rate, we were having lunch, Redpurse and I, and I confessed to here that 'fantastic' had become so pervasive in my spoken vocabulary as to be nearly a verbal tick. She suggested I could start saying things, situations, people are 'delicious' instead of my tired 'fantastic.'

I quipped, a grin on my face and sparkle in my eye, "I don't know, don't you think 'delicious' might be a bit--" my eyes darted from side to side in mock stealth, as though it was supremely important we not be overheard, "Gay?" I whispered.

Her eyes and whole being smiled, eyebrow arched in feigned seriousness, leaning in close for emphasis, "Oh, I don't know, but it sure is a bit queer!" with much exuberance, emphasizing the 'queer.'

Our hearty laughter drew much attention that day, I'm sure. Delicious has been my word de jour ever since. Although, I admit, I'm still rather prone to say 'fantastic' now and again.

Rachel is one of the most naturally funny people I know. You never tire of laughing when your around her. She's not one of those people who tires you with their endless quips cause there so unintelligent as to carry on a conversation otherwise. She just has the grandest gift of eliciting, chuckles, silly giggles, and out right fully developed, boisterous guffaws in the midst of supremely intelligent and meaningful conversation. I'm so glad I was able to spend time with her.
